Personal tales of a city

To fish or not to fish? Păstrăvăria Albota is the answer

pastravaria albota

Craving stomach, again. What to eat? Where to eat? These questions are recurring!

When you are eager for some exquisite taste, it feels like it is very hard to decide what exactly you want to eat because a lot of delicious dishes are crossing your mind. Still, it’s been a while since I last ate fish although I struggle to make it a habit to eat it once a week at least, so fish it is. Google, help me! And it did: Păstrăvăria Albota, a trout farm with a restaurant and accommodation: almost a small town at the mountain’s base. You can even fish there and take home your catch to eat it whenever you feel like.

Approximately 50 km away, 45 minutes drive towards Transfăgărășan road and you get there. Located in the Arpășel Valley surrounded by the Arpășel Nature Reserve the trout farm enjoys an amazing view of the “Vânătoarea lui Buteanu” (2507 m) mountain peak (read the article about this peak here).

The terrace is large and well organized, in order to provide you with the view over the ponds as well. We sat down at one of the free tables enjoying the autumn sun that was enough to warm us up and take off our jackets. Here, they say that 80% of the food and drinks they offer to the customers is produced within the farm. Their prices are moderate, I would dare to say even pretty affordable considering the offerings. Hard to decide what to eat when you read the description of the dishes in the menu while paying attention to the waiters when they bring the beautiful and large portions to the other customers.

Still, we’ve decided: grilled trout fillet with potatoes and two portions of garlic sauce, of course. (by the way, did I ever mention how much I love garlic?!) and trout fillet in corn flour crust. I thought we had to wait more, however it was ready in no time and my mouth was watering. Just have a look:

Oh, the sweet delight of the sun above the mountains! Great food in an amazing setting. Spending our early afternoon filling ourselves with vitamin D while eating healthy and delicious food surrounded by nature.  It has been the best decision to eat our lunch here and I have to thank my curious and inexhaustible appetite for it.

After lunch we decided to take a walk beside the ponds and observe how other visitors are fishing. In fact, it is my desire to fish. I have never been fishing and I wonder how it is. There are a lot of lakes around Sibiu, so hopefully I will have the chance next summer and I promise to tell you all about it.

Last but not least, we went for a short shopping session in their store filled with their own products and we bought some roe and departed. If you want to escape the city for something delicious, Albota trout farm is the best!

Note from the author

“A cup of Sibiu refers to some moments that I want to share with you during morning tea or coffee, these could be sometimes filled with useful information about where to eat, what to visit and other activities, other times just personal stories either funny, retrospective or simply empathising. If you like my stories or have any suggestions, comments, ideas and so on feel free to share them with me.”
