Personal tales of a city

Transalpina Ski Resort – a different kind of adrenaline story

I was never a fan of adrenaline. At least not in the literal meaning of the word. I don’t enjoy roller coasters, nor bungee jumping or anything of this sort. However, I love the adrenaline that a new and good feeling can give you. I noticed that there are a lot of “adrenaline junkies” who would try bungee jumping, but then in a moment of cruel hunger would be too scared to try a new dish at a restaurant and would always choose the safe choice. Am I exaggerating when comparing the two situations? Perhaps! However, I was trying to rest my case, namely, that you can be an adrenaline fan even if you would never try extreme sports or the ordinary roller coaster. I am a fan of living intensely, and that means I go all in when it comes to risking to try another food, signing up for karaoke or open mic poetry totally unprepared, be completely blunt and honest about my feelings in front of another person and even cry or apologize live on a stage if that’s the case. And I would do all of these, despite my heart racing like Bambi’s when chased by a panther. Isn’t that adrenaline? I don’t know, for me it is.

Ok, let’s return to the topic.

Skiing! I like to watch it, I like to be there, but to try it? Neah… Maybe one day. Until then, I will continue going to the mountains, to ski parties and to just be at the ski resort and watch everyone else having fun without me. I enjoy it.

Having said all this, Paltinis is already a well-known location for me since I moved here. I love it and I have explored every corner of it. But the day has come to visit another well-known and actually recently opened ski resort: Transalpina Ski Resort.

Facts:

The resort is located at 2,5 h away from Sibiu. The landscape is beautiful on the way, especially on a cold winter morning. I suggest departing pretty early in the morning in order to catch a parking lot there.

The ski resort opened in 2012. The altitude at the base of the slope is 1350 m. From this point you can take a gondola (for about 2.9 km) reaching 1800 m and from there you can go even higher with a ski lift, which climbs up to 2000 m on the peak called Bora. The total length of the slope is about 6 km.

Subjective aspects:

Landscape! First of all, you will love taking photos here. Second of all, you will love walking and climbing the hill by foot. Or you can do what I have done, namely, I have taken the gongola first, then walked up to the peak taking breaks in order to catch the best pictures I’ve taken. It is true that winter offers a great setting for a photo, but here, the landscape is truly stunning. The panorama over the mountains and the big Vidra lake makes you feel like you are on top of the world.

Walking above the clouds. I have experienced two seasons up there. First it was cloudy and foggy, I thought I would not see much. However, when I reached the highest point, I was in fact above the clouds. Afterwards, the sun shattered away all the clouds and it was so warm that I got tanned.

Picnic. One of the best ideas that I had was to bring with me some snacks and a big thermos with my favourite tea. I even brought a book, but that wasn’t necessary because I couldn’t take my eyes off the landscape to read it.

Finally, I was taken by surprise by my friends with whom I came there saying that we need to leave because I was in fact, not aware of how much time has passed. I will leave you with this picture: I left a piece of my frozen heart there.

Note from the author

“A cup of Sibiu refers to some moments that I want to share with you during morning tea or coffee, these could be sometimes filled with useful information about where to eat, what to visit and other activities, other times just personal stories either funny, retrospective or simply empathising. If you like my stories or have any suggestions, comments, ideas and so on feel free to share them with me.”
